Task 8 UniFi And Topology Evidence Guide
The practical design is created in UniFi Design Center. The syllabus also requires students to understand network diagram conventions for PAN and LAN topologies, so your final evidence must include both:
- UniFi floorplan evidence showing device placement and coverage.
- A logical topology explanation showing how the WAN, LAN, switch, access points and clients connect.
UniFi Evidence Rules
- Show the imported or recreated house floorplan.
- Show the internet/WAN entry point or likely service entry location.
- Show the modem or ONT and gateway/router.
- Show the firewall function or security gateway.
- Show the switch or PoE switch as the central wired LAN device.
- Show access point placement.
- Show coverage evidence or heatmap screenshots.
- Show wired links for access points and fixed high-demand devices where suitable.
- Label guest, IoT, family, home office or camera network separation where suitable.
- Keep screenshots readable and cropped to the evidence being discussed.
Logical Topology Rules
Your topology section should show or explain this logical order:
Internet / WAN
|
Modem or ONT
|
Gateway / router / firewall
|
PoE switch
|---- Wired access points
|---- Home office ethernet
|---- TV / media / gaming devices
|---- Cameras or doorbell devices
|---- NAS / printer / other fixed devices
|
Wireless networks
|---- Family devices
|---- Guest devices
|---- IoT devices
|---- Camera/security devices
Required Labels
Your evidence should label:
- WAN/internet side
- LAN side
- gateway/router
- switch or PoE switch
- wireless access points
- wired ethernet or PoE links
- wireless clients or wireless coverage
- network groups such as family, guest, IoT, home office or camera network
What Makes The Evidence Accurate
- The floorplan shows where devices are placed.
- The topology explains how devices connect.
- The switch is the central connection point for the wired star topology.
- Access points connect back to the LAN, preferably using ethernet/PoE where possible.
- Guest and IoT devices are not treated as identical to private or home office devices.
- Device labels match the written justification.
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Submitting only a real estate floorplan | Add UniFi device placement and coverage evidence. |
| Submitting only a heatmap | Add the logical topology and written justification. |
| Placing access points with no explanation | Link AP placement to room layout, distance, walls and coverage needs. |
| Showing every device directly connected to the internet | Show local devices connecting through the LAN switch or wireless access points. |
| Forgetting transmission media labels | Label ethernet, PoE, wireless and WAN where relevant. |
| Ignoring network separation | Explain guest, IoT, family, home office or camera separation where suitable. |
