Task 7 Practical Test Paper: Programming

Instructions To Students

Answer all parts of the practical test. Complete your work in the approved programming environment and submit your final evidence through the LMS.

You must work independently. Do not use unapproved internet resources, messaging, generative AI, copied code or another student's work.

Scenario

A Year 12 student wants a small program that helps them check whether a short study session is balanced.

The program should:

  1. ask for the student's name
  2. ask for the number of minutes spent revising theory
  3. ask for the number of minutes spent practising questions
  4. calculate the total study time
  5. display the total study time
  6. display feedback:
    • if total study time is less than 30 minutes, display Short session - add more practice
    • if total study time is 30 to 60 minutes, display Balanced session
    • if total study time is more than 60 minutes, display Long session - take a break
  7. allow the student to enter study times for three sessions
  8. display the number of balanced sessions at the end

Part A: Program Understanding And Design

Question 1

Complete the input-process-output table.

Inputs Processing Outputs

Question 2

Complete the data plan.

Value Suitable data type Reason
student name
theory minutes
practice minutes
balanced session count

Question 3

Write pseudocode or structured planning notes for the main logic.

Part B: Program Construction

Create the program described in the scenario.

Your program must show:

  • input
  • processing
  • output
  • suitable variables
  • sequence
  • selection
  • iteration
  • a final count of balanced sessions

Part C: Testing, Debugging And Documentation

Question 4

Complete the test table.

Test type Test data Expected result Actual result
Normal Theory 20, practice 25 Total 45, balanced session
Boundary Theory 15, practice 15 Total 30, balanced session
Boundary Theory 30, practice 30 Total 60, balanced session
Invalid or unexpected Theory -5, practice 20 Program should not accept negative time, or should be identified as a limitation if validation is not built

Question 5

Complete a trace table for one loop iteration using theory minutes = 20 and practice minutes = 25.

Step theoryMinutes practiceMinutes totalMinutes feedback balancedCount
Start of iteration
After input
After calculation
After selection
After counter update

Question 6

Add at least one comment or short explanation that helps a reader understand an important part of your code.
