What the APPs are
The Australian Privacy Principles are principles in the Privacy Act that guide how personal information should be handled by organisations and agencies covered by the Act.
For this task, use the APPs as critique questions. Ask whether a smart home system handles people and data responsibly.
Useful APP ideas for this task
| APP idea | Student-friendly question |
|---|---|
| Open and transparent management | Is it clear how the system handles personal information? |
| Anonymity or pseudonymity | Could a person use the system without giving unnecessary identity details? |
| Collection of solicited personal information | Is only necessary information collected? |
| Notification of collection | Is the user told what is collected and why? |
| Use or disclosure | Is information used only for the expected purpose? |
| Security of personal information | Is information protected from misuse, interference, loss and unauthorised access? |
| Access and correction | Could a user access or correct information about them if this were a real service? |
Applying APPs to a smart home
A model Simpsons House may not collect much personal information. A real smart home could create a larger digital footprint, such as:
- when someone is home
- which doors or lights are used
- device identifiers
- app account details
- logs of commands or errors
- video, audio or sensor readings if extra devices are added
A strong audit explains what data exists now and what data could become sensitive in a real version.
Example critique sentence starters
- The system should tell users that it collects or displays ... because ...
- The system should minimise ... because the user does not need ...
- The system creates a digital footprint when ...
- The strongest privacy concern is ... because ...
- A practical improvement would be ...
